Interesting Artifacts: Sewing Kits

Sewing kits ready to repair a stray rip or tear, busted seam, come in all shapes and sizes: metal tins, fabric rolls, wood boxes, leather cases, celluloid shapes, ivory carved shapes, velvet boxes. Almost any kind of imaginable shape and fabrication you can imagine. I'm featuring some small metal ones that could easily be carried in a pocket or purse. Very portable and handy. And fun to collect!

I like these metal "bullet" shaped ones below. Notice the Calvert's advertisement. Many were advertising give-aways. The shape is comfortable in the hand and very portable. They date anywhere from 1930 to 1950's. The inside has two small spools of thread inserted on a plastic tube core that contains a few needles and pins.

This enameled one is eight-sided and made in Germany. The enamel colors of cream, green, orange and black suggest 1920-1930's. Inside there's a thimble, two spools on a core that has a brass cap and room for pins and needles inside of it.

This one reminds me of an old cigarette lighter. But it has some extra goodies in it the others don't. How about a small telescoping knife and pencil!

Here's an enameled red "bullet" that has it's tassel still. The usual arrangement on the inside, probably made in Germany.

The last one brings a smile to me: a walnut. It's missing it's thimble but it's still cute. This could be considered just a thimble holder, but with the addition of the fabric for pins/needles I consider it a sewing kit.

I hope you've enjoyed a little view into little sewing kits!
